A Vision for the Future of World Triathlon

I’ve spent over 20 years of my life as a professional triathlete, representing my country at two Olympic Games. Along the way, I’ve seen the challenges triathlon faces—from athletes’ struggles to governance issues in both poorly supported and well-funded nations. Drawing from my experience as a member of the World Triathlon Executive Board for the past seven years, I am confident that I’m ready to take the next step in leadership as I run for the presidency of World Triathlon.

Our Competitive Landscape

Across the global triathlon world, athletes developed through the World Triathlon system are driving excitement and engagement for other organizations. These athletes, exemplifying excellence, perseverance, and discipline, are being showcased on multiple platforms—a testament to the strength of our sport and the talent we nurture.

However, this success raises a critical question for World Triathlon: How do we better promote the athletes and events we’ve worked so hard to develop? The challenge isn’t the quality of our athletes or events—they’re already world-class. The real issue lies in evolving our marketing strategies to ensure triathlon gains the global recognition it deserves. If we don’t act now, we risk falling behind as others take the lead in showcasing the talent from our system.

The Olympic Standard, Year-Round: Growing the Audience and Engaging Communities

The recent Olympic Games showcased triathlon on a grand stage—spectacular venues, top-tier competition, and global attention. As a two-time Olympian, I know firsthand the excitement and prestige the Games bring. However, our World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) consistently rivals the Olympic standard in terms of competition and excellence, yet these events, hosted several times a year, do not receive the same global recognition. The issue is not the quality of our events, but the visibility and exposure we provide them.

To gain the audience we deserve, we need to adapt and evolve. Our athletes are among the best in the world, and our organizational capabilities are exceptional. However, our global reach has not yet matched our potential. To change this, we must view marketing not as a cost, but as an investment that brings in new fans, sponsors, and revenue. Our marketing strategies must align with the modern, digital landscape, with accessibility being a top priority.

Many major sporting organizations have embraced free, widely accessible event coverage, allowing fans worldwide to engage with their content. In contrast, we continue to charge for online viewing, limiting our reach and potential growth. To expand our audience, we must make our events accessible to as many people as possible, leveraging digital platforms to engage with a wider global fanbase.

Building Community Engagement

Equally important is how we engage with local communities. Our events should not only showcase elite athletes but also provide an inclusive platform for broader participation. By hosting age-group races at every WTCS event, we can foster a deeper connection with triathletes at all levels, building a community around the sport. Additionally, Mixed Team Relays offer a unique, dynamic, and inclusive format that can engage athletes across all levels. While we haven’t fully tapped into this potential, doing so could create vibrant, community-centered events that enhance the experience for both athletes and fans.

Through increased visibility, a modernized marketing approach, and strong community engagement, we can ensure that World Triathlon remains a global leader in the sport while reaching new heights of recognition and participation. The path forward is clear: with strategic action, we can elevate triathlon to its rightful place on the world stage.

Rebuilding the Value of Continental Championships

I believe it is time to restore the prominence of the Continental Championships. These events once served as a point of pride for athletes and fans alike, helping to build a stronger connection with local audiences. By repositioning these events on the calendar and elevating their importance, we can ensure that triathlon maintains a strong presence across all continents.

Together, We Shape Tomorrow

Triathlon has been my life’s work for over two decades. From my days as an athlete to my current role in leadership, I’ve seen the sport evolve, but there is so much more potential to unlock. If we want true change, we need fresh perspectives alongside the strong foundation we already have in place. Let me be the bridge between generations, bringing experience and new ideas together. The time for action is now. Together, we can shape the future of triathlon and ensure it thrives on the global stage.
